Program Overview

 

Northshore Recovery High School (NRHS) opened its doors in September 2006 with the support of the Northshore Education Consortium, Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. NRHS meets the diverse academic, recovery and mental health needs of students who have a diagnosed substance use disorder. Staff at Northshore Recovery High School are committed to providing students and their families with the support necessary so that students can complete their high school education and receive a diploma in an environment that supports the individual’s unique recovery needs.

Mission

Education, Community & Accountability

NRHS provides recovering students a safe and supportive community in an academic and therapeutic environment. NRHS fosters an ethic of honesty and mutual respect, promoting accountability to oneself and to the community, and prepares students for higher education, military service or employment.

Program Details

  • Serve students ages 14-21 with substance use disorder diagnosis

  • Provide strong support for families and opportunities for parent involvement

  • Highly qualified, DESE licensed staff

  • Create individualized recovery plans

  • Offer individual and group recovery counseling

  • Follow comprehensive academic curriculum consistent with MA Frameworks

  • Provide MCAS testing

  • Follow DESE regulations for students with 504s and IEPs – including those who have needed out of district placements for SED

  • Work closely with sending districts to comply with graduation requirements

  • Award diplomas from sending districts

  • Offer smaller class sizes

  • Serve approximately 30-50 students

  • Jointly funded by the MA-DPH & local school districts

Creating a Recovery Community

  • Throughout the day, students are expected to attend psycho-social groups which address substance use, trauma, relationships, accountability, transition, grief and loss, healthy choices, self-esteem, bullying, stigma, and co-occurring disorders.

  • Students are encouraged to take part in the peer to peer recovery support.

  • Staff and students understand that addiction is a chronic disease and follow the evidence-based practices which address the comprehensive needs of adolescents diagnosed with a SUD.

 

Admission

 

Students can be referred by school districts, families, treatment providers, youth-serving state agencies and juvenile justice. All students need to follow the following steps to complete the process:

STEP 2: Tour, Information and Interview Session
Tours are scheduled Monday through Thursday between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. Tours typically take about 45 minutes. This visit needs to be scheduled in advance through Ana Lanzilli, alanzilli@nsedu.org 978-922-3305 ext.1600. Parents/guardians must accompany prospective student. Your child will have an interview with their principal or designee to determine whether their placement is appropriate for NRHS. During the interview you and your child will be expected to discuss their current commitment to addressing substance use and mental health issues that are currently impacting their lives. If your child is on an IEP or 504 plan please bring that documentation with you as well as any recent psychological testing or discharge paperwork.

STEP 3: Application and Required Documentation
Student Intake Packet must be returned with all required documentation as listed on the form prior to enrollment acceptance. Please send completed forms to us via fax, email or mail to:
